So another month passes, as does another NRUG. Great to see a new face at last weeks NRUG meeting; thanks for coming along Matthew.

I think we’re going to start to try and add a bit more structure to the NRUG meetings. Those who have been will know that the evening largely evolves around us talking about anything, generally Internet related with an emphasis on the use of Ruby, what tools we’re using, what we’ve been working on and what we’ve been learning, along with some beer drinking.

I have however been talking to Tom Crinson, who runs the Ipswich Ruby User Group (IPRUG). He has kindly offered some words of advice about running the group and has suggested some approaches for giving talks, running Ruby quiz nights and engaging people with some snappy presentations. Thanks Tom.

So, the plan is, the next NRUG will be in May on Thursday, 3rd May. It’s a small break for us to compose our thoughts, ready for the first NRUG CURRY NIGHT! (Time/Location TBC)

We thought it might be good to shake up the usual pub meeting with a curry night instead. This will be a fairly informal event where we can relax after the rigours of the day.

So once again, new and old faces alike, are all welcome, the more the merrier, but please let me know if you’d like to come along so we can gauge numbers before booking.

March NRUG - 22/03/12

Just to announce that the March edition of NRUG will be happening on Thursday 22nd of March at The Plough on St. Benedicts Street, Norwich.

If anyone has any particular topics they would like to discuss at this event, any demos they would like to show off or anything they would like to learn then leave a comment and we’ll make sure everything is place for this to happen. Some potential topics to get your thought process going:

NoSQL

Caching strategies

Performance

Your new favourite Gem.

It’s always great catching up with the crowd to find out what everyones working on, what ideas people have and what new bits and pieces people have learnt.

Although slow, the NRUG group project is taking some shape and we have conversations being piped out to those users who have set their preferred means of contact as Twitter. Basic stuff for now but it’s a start.

Also a big welcome to Kieran who joined us for the first time. Kieran rides solo with his company Invisible Lines and develops internal Intranet systems primarily. It’s fantastic to get another new face to the group and some more Ruby experience on board. Hopefully we’ll see you again Kieran.

Anyway, it would be great to get even more new faces down to the group so if any of you know a Ruby developer, or any kind of developer who may be interested in sharing a few ideas over a pint or two then please advise them of our meetup and lets see if we can expand the Ruby community within Norwich and Norfolk a bit more.

I look forward to seeing you all next month.

February NRUG: 23/02/12

Hello. Happy January and all that - boy doesn’t it fly.

Anyway. We’ve decided that for next months NRUG we will be meeting at The Plough in Norwich, on St. Benedicts street on the 23rd February at 7:30pm.

Discussions will continue to evolve around progress with regards to the NRUG group project, Ruby and as usual anything web related.

We look forward to seeing you there!

PS. New comers more than welcome. The more the merrier.

January NRUG Update

Hi all,

Thanks to those who were able to make it last night. So here’s a little update on the group project we discussed when we were together last.

Pete and Sami have begun development, looking at integrating twitter and email with the system but both felt it would be good to have an idea of the interface before taking this any further.

Rob has knocked up a couple of early visuals for an interface (see below) which has helped raise some questions about positioning of the message box, truncation of the conversation, limits on message sizes (and whether this is something the system should manage automagically.)

Please feel free to fork the Github repository and have a play around if you get some time, otherwise, look forward to seeing you at the next meet up.

I look forward to discussing our progress on the group project (https://github.com/coolbox/NRUG/tree/staging) and how everyone is getting on.

Don’t forget to bring along any ideas you have had for what we can do in future meetings. Looking forward to seeing everyone again and hearing about any of your Ruby adventures over the last month.

Perhaps drop a comment on this post to indicate your interest and attendance to the evenings activities so we can gauge numbers.

Steve (Kirkendall) kindly emailed me a few additions that i thought should be shared just incase anyone wasn’t aware of them.

If anyone has anything else they use regularly then feel free to post and share.

Conducting a Group Project

Sami had a good idea last night, suggesting if we did do this it would be good to split the group into two teams to attack the project from. That way each group could present their solution and how they came to it. The shortcoming to this suggestion though is that we need project ideas. Something based on Norwich/Norfolk would be good to showcase the group.

Ill get a blog post up on the Norwich RUG Tumblr for idea contributions. Or feel free to email any… Organising some talks Either 3rd party outsiders, or one or two people from the group each week, picking a subject, Ruby based ideally, and presenting some findings and knowledge to the group.

Ruby Quiz Each month we set a challenge for group members to try and solve. We can then discuss and dissect the solutions at each group. Perhaps a prize or a pint might be a good incentive for people to do this…

A Social For Geeks Alternatively we could forget about the idea of doing anything constructive and just use this time to get away from computer screens and talk to one another - weird i know!

The first Norwich Ruby User Group meetup went down last night...

The first Norwich Ruby User Group meetup went down last night (10/11/2011) and it was a lot of fun.
